Replacing Humans with ChatGPT is Happening Right Now

“Overall, most business leaders are impressed by ChatGPT’s work,” ResumeBuilder.com wrote in a news release. “Fifty-five percent say the quality of work produced by ChatGPT is ‘excellent,’ while 34% say it’s ‘very good.'”
- Fortune, February 2023.

“Accountants, factory workers, truckers, paralegals, and radiologists — just to name a few — will be confronted by a disruption akin to that faced by farmers during the Industrial Revolution,”
- Kai-Fu Lee, AI expert, and CEO of Sinovation Ventures, 2018.

A recent article in Fortune talks about the elimination of jobs due to artificial intelligence.

Not in ten years or even ten minutes - it is already happing.  The article starts out, "In the 10 or so days since its grand entrance, ChatGPT has been everywhere:..."

10 Days.

The article goes on to say, "Business leaders already using ChatGPT told ResumeBuilders.com say their companies already use ChatGPT for a variety of reasons, including 66% for writing code, 58% for copywriting and content creation, 57% for customer support, and 52% for meeting summaries and other documents."

Executive Summary:
  • Nearly half of US companies using OpenAI's ChatGPT have reported that the chatbot has already replaced workers.
  • Business leaders use ChatGPT reports using it for a variety of tasks including writing code, copywriting, customer support, and document creation.
  • While there are concerns about the accuracy and potential bias of ChatGPT, companies have reported saving money using the tool and plan to expand its use in the future. However, it's important to remember that ChatGPT is a tool and should not be relied on for tasks that require human insight and decision-making.
Out of 'nowhere' the metamorphosis has begun.

Greg's Opinion:
  • If you think this is just a fad like managed print services, you are wrong.
  • If you believe we're talking too much about artificial intelligence in the office technology niche, you are wrong.
  • If you think you have all the time world to adjust, you are very, very wrong.
Today, Artificial intelligence is eliminating search engines, and SEO, and rendering spreadsheets, CRMs, and websites obsolete.

Why ask AI to create a spreadsheet macro, when you can tell it to simply perform the action, generating results directly, without working a spreadsheet?

Why pay a human to manage your time, take notes, and schedule future actions, when the AI is handling it.  Why pay a CFO to analyze the financial position of your company, and take 10 days to generate and present findings, when AI can provide more depth, and analysis quicker?

All by itself, AI in business is a big pivot.  But roll recovering from the fear of a global pandemic, the remote working movement, a 'recession', a 'war', and the entire global re-alignment, and we have much more than a 'pivot' - we are in the midst of the greatest social, economic,

So it shouldn't be any wonder that jobs are disappearing; from scribes to looms to automotive paint booths, transformation always jettisons manual jobs.

I guess the big question is, "What functions is AI replacing"

The answer is, "Any function that requires a process because AI duplicates, and optimizes all processes.  Continually."

For the office technology niche, AI will change the way we bring ideas to market, and the way our prospects run their businesses and forge relationships.  There will be fewer of us, and our overall acumen will far exceed levels obtained just six, short months ago.  We will be happier, more creative, and more productive.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace is rapidly increasing, and OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot is quickly becoming a popular tool for companies. In just 10 days since its official stable release, ChatGPT has already found its way into the workplace, replacing workers in nearly half of the U.S. companies currently using it.

Business leaders are excited about ChatGPT's potential and are implementing the chatbot for a variety of tasks, including writing code, copywriting, content creation, customer support, and document summarization. In the hiring process, companies are also using ChatGPT to help write job descriptions, draft interview requisitions, and respond to applications.

However, ChatGPT is not without its issues. Concerns have been raised about its accuracy, cheating and plagiarism, and possible biases. The Atlantic’s Ian Bogost warned it should be treated as a toy, not a tool, and New York Times tech columnist Kevin Roose said that Microsoft’s new A.I. version of its Bing search engine powered by ChatGPT’s OpenAI left him feeling "deeply unsettled" and "even frightened" after a two-hour chat in which it sounded unhinged and somewhat dark.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously warned that ChatGPT shouldn’t be relied on for "anything important." In a recent series of tweets, Altman expressed concerns about the dangers posed by AI technology and the iterations to follow, saying he worried how people of the future will view us.

While it is true that AI tools like ChatGPT can streamline certain job responsibilities and save companies money, it is also important to consider the potential consequences of replacing human workers with machines. The long-term impact of AI on the job market and the economy is still unclear.

Despite these concerns, the majority of companies using ChatGPT report saving money, with 48% saying they've saved more than $50,000 and 11% saying they've saved more than $100,000. However, the economic model for using ChatGPT is still evolving, and it remains to be seen how it will impact the job market and the reorganization of certain jobs within companies.

AI is not foolproof, and the quality of work produced by ChatGPT has been rated by business leaders as "excellent" by 55% and "very good" by 34%. As such, relying on ChatGPT for critical tasks can be risky.

Ultimately, the future of ChatGPT and other AI tools in the workplace is still uncertain. While the majority of companies using ChatGPT plan to expand their use of the chatbot in the future, it is important to carefully consider the potential consequences of replacing human workers with machines. AI can streamline certain tasks and save money, but it should not be relied on for anything critical or important.

Inspiration, here.

Image Prompt: An image of an office worker sitting at a desk with a chatbot displayed on their computer screen, while other workers in the background work at their own desks.

Song Suggestion: "The Times They Are A-Changin'" by Bob Dylan - this song's lyrics speak to the idea of societal and cultural changes and can serve as a reminder that as AI transforms the workplace, we must adapt to these changes and find new ways of working together with machines.
